12,000 miles to Alaska and back

I have the basket (GearWarrior, with a rubber latex bag) and the box, with the lights, on the back end of a 2022 Ford Bronco. I just put 12k miles on them (3k on gravel roads including the Dalton, McCarthy road, and the worse west 50 miles of the Denali Hwy - unending potholes). Not much off-road but some; that was fine with the lighter recommended load maximums. Do put the box on top so you can open it easily - having to reverse the TopShelf/basket is a pain. Generally, it all worked well! There are two things to consider. First, the box kept out water (a lot of Alaskan rain) but did leak in some dry dust. Plan on that for what you put into it. Second, the base and LitKit (lights) got pretty beat up by gravel. No rust to speak of but I am going to easy-sand and paint those pieces (including the hitch part and TopShelf part that fits into the Base. Paying almost $2k for this stuff, it makes sense to take care of it. BTW, I had someone try to get into my Bronco through the soft-top but they left the box and basket-bag alone. And if you are wondering, the Bronco was great and I got 21.8 mpg over the 12k miles. And the Curt 18211 bag was great!

Get a free exo system at a parking g lot near you!

With 2 wrenches you can bypass the hitch lock and receive a free exo system! Thank you yakima! Please design a lock for your bolts. Not good, not good at all. Other than that, system is great. And free!

Gets 5 Stars if More Secure

Just bought the Swingbase and the Topshelf. This is a great system no doubt. I love to hunt, fish, snowboard, and get out into the mountains. Obviously, a modular system like this one preferred to address all of the needs of those activities. The one big drawback with this system is security. The two bolts that secure the Swing Base itself to the tongue mount are not locked, so anyone wandering around with a 24m socket wrench can essentially pop off the most expensive part of the assembly (the swing base itself). I talked to Yakima and asked if there were any solutions this problem, they pretty much told me there are none.

So, I went to the local hardware store and got myself two M14 10.9 Hex Bolts that are a half inch longer than the factory bolts Yakima sends. I took those and drilled two holes in the ends of them where I plan to do the following:

      1. Weld a steel rod through the end of the screw. This serves a dual purpose as it will prevent someone from removing the nut from the bolt and it will prevent the nut from coming loose due to the constant vibration from the road.
      2. Use a reinforced padlock instead which will also address what I noted above.

All you need to do this is some oil, a vice, and a drill bit. Make sure you screw a nut at the bottom of the threading before drilling the hole so that after the hole is drilled, the nut can rethread over the hole accordingly. The rethreading is done by simply unscrewing the nut. Make sure you get a replacement nut as the one you use to rethread is likely toast. Further, this does not compromise any of the factory parts that come with the system so it's hard for me to believe this will void the warranty. MAKE SURE THE BOLT IS RATED 10.9 AND IS MEANT FOR OUTDOOR USE! Also, use Loctite and get a Nylon Locknut :).

@Yakima: Please consider the security concerns of your customers of this otherwise genius system!

      Yakima Straightshot extender

Hi Gary Dusza, did you consider the hitch extender? Or would that cut the tongue weight in half? I've been trying to get answers out of Yakima tech support. I ended up ordering Swing base from REI and was hoping for a different result than your video depicts. Didn't happen. Doesn't work. Kuat makes a 2" drop hitch extender but the weight rating is only 250lbs.

      NOT SECURE . . .

Yakima stocks just started to come in Canada and was able to get mine this week.
I love the modularity of it and it meets my needs for a 4-seasons adventure but they forgot to put a locking mechanism on the tongue and exo swing base.

The option options to secure it are:
      1. weld it but not sure if it will still be under warranty
      2. use a chain/cable lock to secure it by attaching it your hitch receiver and the exo swingbase. ( this adds additional steps since you need to do it every time when you use the swing base and its accessories.

not sure if there is a bolt & nut which is similar to the size that Yakima uses but longer and has a similar locking key of a hitch lock.

I wish Yakima made one their bolt & nut a bit longer and can be locked with a hitch key or put a third hole (if structurally sound) and provided a hitch lock.

I hope Yakima will find a way in having a solution for this design flaw to secure the tongue and the swing base since all you need is two 24mm socket wrench and your wing base and gear are gone.

To Yakima design engineers, please let us know if you have a solution or if you can make a longer bolt & nut with lock key i will most likely buy one.

      Does not fit

Does not fit the 2021 Ram promaster 3500 , the rear door door will not open when the swingbase is in any position. Many places such as Rack Attack don't have fitment guides and the yakima fitment site is apparently misleading also.

      Love the idea, but...

I don't own this. But I have thought about building a similar custom rack. But why create a new standard for the rails and attachment? Why not just have standard roof rails on it and allow us to install any of the existing ski, bike, etc mounts designed for the roof on the back of the car. I would be much more likely to invest in the mounts if I knew I could mount on the roof, or on a hitch system like this. So close to what I want...

great feedback from Steven Vetterdiaz -- I am wondering what do you mean to bend the spare holder, the reason is that I am getting my Subaru Wilderness and love the design of the EXO system.

EXO SwingBase with EXO GearLocker + EXO LitKit, nicest looking hitch mounted cargo box on the market

In order to install the EXO SwingBase to my 2021 Subaru Outback Onyx (with OEM hitch), i had to bend (with pliers) the spare tire holder about half an inch back. The tailgate opens clearing the installed EXO GearLocker. It came with two matching lock cores. With a control key from Rack N Road i was able to switch out the core on the EXO GearLocker to match the EXO SwingBase making it a single key system (SKS). My Blind spot detection seems to work the same as well as the rear cross traffic alert. Backup camera has a view around the box which is nice too. Tail lights 100% visible but i opted for the additional EXO LitKit anyhow. Didn’t move my license plate as it is still visible as well. I don’t notice any noise when driving on the freeway, i made dividers with dollar store foam boards. Hope this helps as I don’t see many (if any) reviews so far.
