Great bike rack. Easy to put on the hitch, easy to put bikes on, and easy to secure. Bikes always feel secure, even at highway speeds. I will say that its difficult to get 5 bikes on the rack. I don't see this as much of draw back, as it is doable and I wouldn't want the rack to extend much further. Unfortunately, my rack was destroyed when my truck was rear ended. But I intend to buy another one.
I should have read more. This does not have a locking feature, and the clamps to secure the bike have some extra connections that make it very difficult to put on mtn bikes. Selling mine to find something better. One would think at this price it would be complete. Didnt thing these came without locking features. Atleast some type of loop attached to the rack so I can use my own lock chain. Bummer
Like many others commenting on here, I like the rack but two of my bikes will not fit on this due to the Zip Straps being too short. Please make longer straps available, and I'll change my value rating. As is having to buy two more bikes to keep the same brand after car got hit is a pretty low value.
Bought this product in the last year or two. Have used it less than 20 times. The lever that lowers the device is made of cheap plastic and it broke off making the entire device unusable. Very disappointing. A better design would have made such a critical component out of metal or some other design that would prevent such a catastrophic failure. Yakima can do better. If you are a serious biker, I would advise you to avoid this product.
Needed a hitch mounted bike rack for my Honda Pilot because the roof is a little too high. Read a lot of reviews on the Ridgeback and liked what I was seeing so I took the plunge and bought the 5 bike version. Very easy to setup and load bikes if you have a 2" hitch. It has a lot of useful features including the ability to tilt (no bikes), add a lock for added security and a built in bottle opener. The rack itself feels solid but not too heavy when compared to other hitch mounted bike racks. I did a test drive in my neighborhood observing the bike rack through my rear mirror and there is little movement and sway. Need to test it with a full load of 5 bikes but I'm optimistic. For the price I think you get a really solid product that is backed by a lifetime warranty from Yakima. Only complaint is the Yakima logo is stickers and not painted on so I know it will come off eventually. Also wish they had a version just for 2" hitches but it feels solid so can't really knock that.
Bought the 4 to use for my entire family's bikes. Unfortunately my bike is the only one that fits. My wife's 51cm bike is too small to fit on this rack and same with my child's bike. For a rack made to hold 4 bikes you would think you could also adjust the width of the rack to accommodate all size bikes. Really disappointed about this.
I have had a cradle mount hitch rack for years and it was time to see what improvements have been made to bike transportation....what a surprise! I put two Electra townie's ,men/women's on the arms and had stuff looking very strange as the bikes were not hanging level. Long and short of it I had to use a rail on both bikes and get them exactly where I wanted them on the arms, facing different directions, and I am very pleased,650 miles no mars, scratching or a worry of bikes blowing off ( crossed the Mackinaw Bridge) should have done this sooner!
I have to be honest about this rack... This is my third hitch rack by Yakima. The earlier models were designed much better. The hard plastic mounts and straps have literally worn down my bikes frame paint and scratched them down to the aluminum from swaying back and forth. The straps and lock set do not keep your bike in place like earlier models. This creating wear and tear on your frames. It's super unfortunate, because I can't undo this problem without a repaint. I would display photos if I could. I do love this company and have two roof racks that I really dig. Even though those also do not accommodate a 2.3 wide mountain bike tire without deflating them. I hope in the future they fix this problem and more people save frame damage.
I have generally been very happy with this rack - overall it is quite sturdy, easy to use, and very flexible. I am not aware of many other vendors producing a 5 bike rack for hitch receiver install. The "weak link" is the hitch receiver part. I have had my rack for about 3 years now and every year a bend in this solid steel piece becomes a bit more pronounced. Instead of the solid steel part that is adapted to fit the larger receiver, this would be better as a tubular steel part for only the larger receiver; and my assumption is the 5 bike version should not be available if you only have the 1.25" smaller receiver.
It seems like a rack built for 4 bikes would take kids' bike frames into consideration. The Ridgeback 4, even using a TubeTop, I could not get a 24" mountain bike onto the rack because the cradles are so bulky there is not enough space where the angled top tube meets the down tube. Because the stem is short, even using a TubeTop there is the same problem. I gave 3 stars to the "quality" rating because this is kind of a big oversight for a family bike rack that is not addressed in the product description.
