For our latest vehicle build, we took the new-generation 2025 Ford Ranger XLT and transformed it into a purpose-built overland rig centered around Yakima's latest special edition truck rack. From carrying gear and creating a comfortable basecamp to improving off-road capability and trail-ready performance, every upgrade was chosen with one goal in mind: building a truck that's ready to explore farther and stay out longer.
Of course, no build like this comes together alone. We teamed up with some of the best brands in the industry, each contributing products that help make this Ranger equally at home on the trail, at camp, or on the highway between adventures.

Building the Foundation
The foundation of the setup is the Yakima OverHaul HD Shadow Edition. Its rugged, adjustable design creates the perfect platform for hauling gear while maintaining full use of the truck bed. Mounted above it is the Yakima SkyPeak HD rooftop tent, providing a comfortable place to sleep wherever the trail ends.
To extend camp beyond the truck, we added the Yakima OverNOut 270 XL Awning, creating expansive shade and weather protection no matter what conditions you find yourself in. Whether stopping for lunch on the trail or settling in for the night, the awning creates an instant gathering place.
No overland setup is complete without water, so we mounted the Yakima RoadShower, giving us a pressurized water source for rinsing off muddy gear, washing dishes, or cleaning up after a long day on the trail.
Together, these additions transform the Ranger from a capable pickup into a self-supported adventure vehicle that's ready for weekends off the grid or extended overland travel.

Capability & Protection
With the camping system in place, it was time to build a truck capable of reaching those remote destinations.
The Ranger now rides on Fifteen52 Range HD wheels wrapped in 33” Falken Wildpeak AT4W tires, delivering exceptional traction on everything from rocky trails to muddy forest roads while giving the truck an aggressive stance.
To improve ride quality and off-road capability, we paired Fox 2.5 Performance Elite Series front and rear shocks with Rough Country upper control arms. The result is increased suspension performance, better control over rough terrain, and the confidence to tackle more challenging trails.
Protecting everything underneath are RCI Off Road Rock Sliders and the Skid Plate Package, providing critical armor when the trail gets technical.

Organization & Everyday Utility
An overland build is only as good as its organization, and keeping essential gear secure and accessible was a major priority.
Inside the bed, BuiltRight Industries MOLLE panels and accessories create flexible storage for tools, recovery equipment, and camping gear, while the Ford Embark LS tonneau cover helps keep cargo protected from the elements.
RotopaX fuel and water containers with locking mounts provide additional fuel capacity and fresh water storage, giving us extra confidence when venturing farther off the beaten path.
The DMOS Delta Shovel and Axepedition Axe ensure that we are prepared for anything we come across on the trail, or for helping us get wood ready for a campfire.
Inside the cab, Rough Country seat covers help protect the interior from dirt, mud, and everyday wear, while Tackform dash mounts provide secure mounting locations for trail apps and a radio.
Communication is just as important when traveling off-grid, so we added a Midland MXT275 GMRS radio and antenna, mounted using a ditch light antenna mount, making it easy to stay connected with the rest of the group when cell service disappears.

Lighting the Way
Lighting was one of the biggest focuses of this build, ensuring the Ranger is just as capable after sunset as it is during the day.
The truck now features AlphaRex NOVA Series Alpha Black headlights, providing improved nighttime visibility while giving the front end a bold, modern appearance.
To illuminate the trail, we turned to Diode Dynamics, equipping the Ranger with:
- SS3 Combo pod lights
- SS20 Pro light bar
- C2 2.0 Flood lights
- LED Reverse Bulbs
- Bed Light Kit
A Morimoto X3B Third Brake Light rounds out the lighting package with additional rear-facing illumination and a clean, modern look.
Powering the entire auxiliary lighting system is a Garmin PowerSwitch, giving us seamless control of every accessory from inside the cab while eliminating the need for multiple standalone switches.
Performance Upgrades
An aFe POWER cold air intake helps improve airflow and engine efficiency while adding a subtle performance boost. To increase trail clearance, we also installed a Ford Performance high-clearance exhaust, improving the truck's departure angle and helping it clear obstacles with confidence while adding a bold exhaust note from the V6.

Appearance Upgrades
Capability may have driven this build, but we wanted the Ranger's appearance to reflect its purpose as well.
To create a clean, cohesive look, we blacked out the factory badging and exterior trim, complementing the Shadow Edition rack and giving the truck a more aggressive, understated style.
We also installed Rough Country fender flares, adding additional tire coverage while giving the truck a wider, more planted stance.
