Do not buy from Yakima! Yakima customer service sucks! I bought a nice , 2k paddle board, the sale person recommended the Bowdown racks and it broke in the middle of the Highway. I called Yakima and they did not care , they didn’t take responsibility and didn’t help me to replace it. Go with a company that care about their customers!
This is a solid piece of kit. I wish Yakima made it more modular for overlanding, more compatible with aftermarket modular roof racks (ie. Prinsu, UpTop Bravo and Alpha). Meaning if they could somehow mfg. the replacements mounting brackets with something that would allow us to attach it, possible via screws, to the slide rails that would be fantastic. On that note, this is a tried and true work horse for our family and saves tons of cabin and storage space inside our 4Runner.
10/10 roof box, was able to fit TONS of stuff in there while moving across the US, easy to use and easy to install as long as you have a buddy to help you get it on your roof. It kept my stuff free of dust while driving through dust clouds in Texas and it kept my stuff completely dry driving through downpours in Louisiana. You get some wind noise but it won’t bother you as long as you have some tunes going. As a bonus, everything fit like a charm when I set it off-center and put a yakima bike rack up there.
Good quality box, easy to install. Light enough to toss around, but it's awkward shape and size make it a bit tricky solo but can be easily done. The cargo net accessory is a perfect tie down solution and has hooks aligned in the exact locations to hit the tie down points. The shipper was a little dodgy, but this is not the fault of yakima in the least and I did get everything in tact.... just not on the date their tracking indicated, and my stuff wound up showing up on two different days. This is on the freight company though. Just a nuisance is all. Box makes very little wind noise. Locking system and hinges seem fantastic!! Very pleased with this purchase.
After determine our previous Yakima couldn’t be duct taped together any longer (the shell fractured in the cold and the rear hinge failed years ago) we decided to purchase the Skybox 16 Carbonite which we just received. First thing I noticed was how much lighter it is compared to our previous skybox 21 but then my attention turned to the locking/latch mech hoping it was better and unfortunately it’s still bad. This new one is very hard to open and nearly impossible to get it to close. I couldn’t imagine trying to do it on top of the car. We’re considering returning it as we wonder if it’s supposed to be this difficult. You definitely need some strength both opening and closing. This one also won’t let you take the key out until it latches, which is a nice feature as you think it’s closed because you’ve squeezed and slammed it so many times that you assume it’s closed, but it’s not. Pretty disappointed with this one.
What I hate: The key has to stay in when you open the box. If you have a large key chain with lots of keys, it would be annoying. My old Skybox 12 didn't have this annoying feature. I could of sworn my old Skybox 12 had more tie down points also. Would be nice if the lower half was dimpled also like the lid. But it's fairly quiet on the highway
Lots of capacity and meets all of our cargo space requirements. We are extremely pleased
very nice SKYBOX
So I'll admit this write-up is a bit long overdue, but I'll make sure to keep it short & sweet. Look no further when it comes to additional storage during long road hauls - Yakima has you covered. The Skybox 16 Carbonite held up amazingly during our 21 hour road trip from California to Texas, and was a huge help considering all our Lexus CT200h was jam packed with two pets - the cargo area was a bit cramped with our cat's carrying crate and litter box. We were able to fit everything we couldn't carry in our car in the additional storage, and it handled like a champ with some of the heavy crosswinds driving through Arizona. Would definitely buy other products from Yakima without question!
I've had the Carbonite 16 box for a couple years now. Each year we take a couple 1500 mile trips with this thing on our Outback. The noise is only noticeable if we open the moonroof shade. With the shade closed, we cannot notice the box on the top of the car. It holds lots of stuff. It got us through many trips with 2 small children and all the required accessories. We went through numerous rainstorms and nothing, absolutely nothing, ever got wet. That was amazing to me as when we are driving 75 mph it is the equivalent of a low level hurricane when it rains. We also never had any issues with anything freezing up. Great design. We did have a hinge distort that made it hard to close, but a quick call to Yakima and they confirmed if the lid snaps shut everything is secure. They also sent a replacement hinge out immediately. I use a thin yoga mat in the bottom to help keep things from rubbing the base. I also sprung for the cargo net Yakima sells. The net helps keeps small loads secure and it also helps compress some bulky items like pillows that we always end up trying to wedge in to the cargo box.
