FAQ:
What else is needed to complete a basic rack set up?
You will need two pairs of Landing Pads, a set of Control Towers and one pair of crossbars.
Will Landing Pads work with Locking RailRiders, or other Yakima Towers?
Landing Pads will integrate with Control Towers only.
What is the weight limit for Landing Pad 7?
A weight limit can only be established through testing. It varies by the strength of the shell, quality of the installation, and too many other factors to guess. This is another area where your judgment will be called upon. Keep in mind the maximum weight limit for these is 100 lbs.
How do I know if Landing Pad 7 will work on my vehicle?
Landing Pad 7 is a custom installation and will work on most vehicles, but installation does require some research and skill. Obstructions such as structural braces and electrical wiring under the roof must be avoided. Contact your local Yakima dealer or Yakima customer service to determine if an installation template is available for your vehicle. If a template does not exist, consult your local body shop or auto garage for professional installation.
What kind of fastener is used?
Landing Pad 7 comes with "blind" fasteners. After drilling holes in the vehicle's roof, these fasteners are inserted into the holes to create a threaded screw housing. The fasteners are inserted lengthwise and when screws are inserted, the fastener shifts to a horizontal position beneath the roof. The Landing Pad 7 and screws are then attached and tightened into the fastener to provide a solid, incredibly strong mounting point for the Control Tower.
Aren’t permanent installations stronger than removable racks?
Probably not. In either case, load capacity is limited by the vehicle, rather than the rack. In fact, removable rack options are often stronger because the rack can be positioned closer to the edges of a roof, where it is naturally stronger. To compare load capacity between options, check the Fit List.
Can I use the blind fastener in fiberglass?
No. These fasteners are designed for sheet metal only and may damage fiberglass. For fiberglass surfaces, we recommend using Landing Pad 6 or our 60-inch track which come with cap nut hardware.
How many bolts are used/holes are drilled?
There are two holes per Landing Pad 7.
What type of waterproofing is used?
Landing Pad 7 features three barriers to repel water. First, silicone is provided to seal the screw threads into the fastener. Each fastener features a built-in foam gasket that rests between the roof of the vehicle and the base of Landing Pad 7 to repel water and protect the paint of your vehicle. Additionally, a rubber washer fits between the head of the screw and the top of Landing Pad 7 to act as the first of three layers of defense against water. We also recommend using touch up paint to cover any bare metal surfaces that are exposed on the edge of the holes. Please consult your auto dealer for the proper touch up paint.
What tools/supplies will I need to install Landing Pad 7?
You will need: tape measure, #2 pencil, drill, drill bits from 1/8 - 25/64", drill stop or masking tape, punch, touch-up paint, and don't forget eye protection!
