You know how the tour of Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory was kind of dangerous?

Kids disappeared (for a while, anyway).

They were OK, but still. There are times where there’s a nervous question among the group: “Is this fun?”

The answer: Of course. But they weren’t just going to *give* you the fun. You had to work for it.

That’s pretty much what’s going on at the City Museum in St. Louis.

It’s art you can climb through. It’s a giant display you’re a part of.

It’s getting lost as a matter of principle.

The word “museum” is definitely the wrong way to describe it.

You’ll have to go there to find the right one.

Road trips are filled with the obscure.

Tiny towns with names like Loogootee, Bummerville, and Idaho Beer Bottle Crossing.

Yeah, that last one’s in Georgia.

But you know what? You should be proud when you’re in the fruitcake capital of the world (also in Georgia. Damn!).

And if there’s climbing?

Or boating?

Or biking?

Or whatever outside-ish activity that makes that place a backwater beacon for those who wander but are not lost?

Then you should get to know that place.

Hence this new series.

Enjoy.

Road trips can get pretty stale on those long stretches of highway. You need something to breathe life back into the adventure.

After the music runs out, the snacks are devoured and the conversation flags, sometimes the excitement of your final destination isn’t enough to keep you going.

Roadside attractions are the perfect antidote to the mid-trip malaise. There’s nothing like experiencing these road oddities with friends and family. You’ll have an instant conversation piece once you’re back in the car and a memory to last until your next road trip and beyond.

Once a month, we’ll give you a peek at some of these places. And just know there are hundreds of these roadside oddities out there, just waiting.

So go ahead, take that exit, venture into the tumbledown entrance and feast your eyes on the mysteries awaiting you there.

Follow team GearJunkie as they hit the Apostle Islands of Lake Superior.

“It’s like spelunking in a boat.” That’s how one guide described the experience of sea kayaking into the sea caves along Lake Superior’s southern shore. Sliding from light into shadow and back again, there’s a certain spirituality hidden among the arches and folds of these cathedrals of ancient sandstone.

Watch as a Team GearJunkie travels to the Badlands to mountain bike almost 100 miles of challenging Badlands terrain in two days in this episode of the “Off The Map.”

Seven mountain bikers geared up and took on the Maah Daah Hey Trail, a remote and rugged 96-mile mountain-biking route in western North Dakota. Seeking elusive signposts, taking only what they can carry, and relying on parched creek beds for filterable water, they pedaled alone through a true no-man’s land under the blazing desert sun.

BONUS: If you happen to be in the Minneapolis area Thursday, August 23, 2012, you can catch this video at the Reels X Wheels film fest.
