Roof Rack vs. Hitch Rack: Which is best?

So, you’re ready to get a rack. But here’s the dilemma: Roof Rack or Hitch Rack. It’s a classic debate. But fortunately there are good reasons to go with either one. Let’s explore, shall we?

First, check out the video:

Roof Rack

Roof racks mount to the top of your car and can handle everything from bikes to kayaks by simply swapping out the carrying system. They’re versatile, secure, and protect your gear by keeping it away from potential fender benders.

With roof racks, you can take a little bit of everything.

And what if your car didn’t come with racks when you bought it? No problem. You can take a “naked” roof and easily outfit it with a removable rack system (what we call a base rack) that won’t damage your roof. No drilling necessary. Pretty sweet setup.

Hitch Rack

Yakima’s hitch racks are super easy to instal in your vehicle’s hitch receiver. Like, we’re talking less than 2 minutes of installation time out of the box. What’s more, some of our racks can hold up to 5 bikes at a time. And hitch racks make it especially easy to load and unload your bikes since you don’t have to lift them any higher than your waist (which is really awesome for downhill mountain bikers). And what if your bike frame is an odd shape and you can’t strap it to the rack? Then check out the HoldUp, which is arguably the fastest and easiest way to load a bike that the world has ever seen.

Oh, and we should probably mention that most of our hitch racks come with built in bottle openers for that post-ride victory beer. Can’t argue with that.
